Movie-A-Day #297: The Dark Knight (2008).
Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, was born on this day in 1915. While this month’s movie-a-day selections are dedicated to horror films, and a costumed comic book hero doesn’t exactly count as horror, “The Dark Knight” is definitely the most genuinely terrifying of the many Batman adaptations. Christopher Nolan’s script raises disturbing questions about the dark side of human nature, and Heath Ledger’s interpretation of The Joker is one of the screen’s all-time great boogeymen.
Movie-A-Day #296: Evil Dead (1983).
Happy 59th birthday to Sam Raimi. “Evil Dead” is a horror comedy classic that kicked off a pretty influential career – a career that will soon be coming full circle with a remake of the movie he’s co-producing (with Bruce Campbell) that’s due out in 2013.
Movie-A-Day #295: The Hunger (1983).
Happy 68th birthday to the still sexy Catherine Deneuve. In “The Hunger” she plays an ageless vampire who is one part of a steamy omnisexual love triangle with Susan Sarandon and David Bowie. What a web to get tangled in.
Movie-A-Day #294: The Reptile (1966).
It’s Reptile Awareness Day! We hope you’re fully aware of the reptiles in your life. And we hope you’re also aware of “The Reptile,” a lesser film in the Hammer Studios horror canon. It doesn’t feature any of the heavy hitters who made so many of Hammer’s classic films, and it doesn’t have a whole lot original to say, but it does have its fun little moments.
Movie-A-Day #293: White Zombie (1932).
Bela Lugosi, one of the icons of horror films, was born on this day in 1882. We’ve already covered his “Dracula” to death here, so today let’s look at “White Zombie” instead. This is the O.G. zombie movie and, along with Val Lewton’s “I Walked With a Zombie,” virtually had the zombie genre to itself until George Romero redefined it in 1968 with “Night of the Living Dead.” Plus, how can you go wrong with Bela in that facial hair, playing a guy named Murder Legendre?
