Movie-A-Day #312: The Candidate (1972).
Today is election day across the United States. Although 2011 is an off year, there are still a few state and local issues for many of you to vote on. But the campaign for 2012 has already begun, so strap in for another bumpy ride. Despite being made nearly four decades ago, Robert Redford’s “The Candidate” is still the definitive portrait of the cynicism and conniving behind major political campaigns.
Movie-A-Day #311: Up in the Air (2009).
Today is Job Action Day, a day dedicated to taking charge of one’s employment situation and working toward a better career. That’s hard to do in our crumbling economy, especially if you’ve been laid off like those poor folks in “Up in the Air.” But you can do it. Don’t let the bastards in the executive suite get you down.
Movie-A-Day #310: Bird (1988).
Today is Saxophone Day. One of the masters of the instrument was Charlie “Bird” Parker, who was played by Forest Whitaker in Clint Eastwood’s biopic. His life was short, but his shadow was huge. And, as Mingus reminded us, if he were a gunslinger there’d be a whole lot of dead copycats.
Movie-A-Day #309: V For Vendetta (2006).
From Tahrir to Madison, from Tripoli to Wall Street… Remember, remember the 5th of November. Stay safe, my friends, and remember to always act out of love, not hate.
Movie-A-Day #308: The Karate Kid (1984).
Ralph Macchio turns 50(!) today. Can you believe our little “Karate Kid” is all grown up?
