Movie-A-Day #332: Gremlins (1984).
Happy 65th birthday to Joe Dante, who directed “Gremlins” and has been away from major motion pictures for far too long.
Movie-A-Day #331: Blow Out (1981).
Today is the National Day of Listening. So I’m not going to say much, just that “Blow Out” is also about listening carefully.
So what have you got to say? Leave a comment below. I’m listening.
Movie-A-Day #330: Rudy (1993).
The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, was founded on this day in 1842. While it’s a fine academic institution, it will always be the University of Football in America. For generations it was the face of college football, even though the program has fallen on hard times in recent decades. Not only did Notre Dame urge us to win one for the Gipper, but it also brought us the inspiring underdog story of “Rudy.” RUDY!!!!!!
Movie-A-Day #329: Black Friday (1940).
If you want to avoid the corporate consumergasm that is Black Friday today, I don’t blame you. Your sanest bet is to either shop at small local businesses or, better yet, stay home and avoid the consumer frenzy all together. If you opt to stay in, do it with “Black Friday,” a forgotten little chestnut featuring both Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, a fun B-grade thriller about mad scientists and gangsters and hidden loot.
Movie-A-Day #328: Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987).
Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers! “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” is still the greatest Thanksgiving movie ever made, and probably will be for a very, very long time.
