Movie-A-Day #48: Inception (2010).

February 17, 2011

Joseph Gordon-Levitt turns the big 3-0 today. He’s made some good movies, but today’s movie is “Inception” because it’s always worth a revisit. JGL even gets showcased in that nifty weightless fight scene in the hotel corridor. BRAAAAAWM!

Movie-A-Day #47: The Mummy (1932).

February 16, 2011

Egypt is still in the news today, just as it was back on Feb. 16, 1923, but for very different reasons. It was 88 years ago today that British archeologist Howard Carter first opened the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamum, launching a fantastic wave of Egypt mania in pop culture. In fact, good ol’ King Tut is still the only pharaoh most people can identify today, precisely because of Carter’s discovery. It also sparked a wave of mummy movies, the best of which was the first of Universal’s franchise, “The Mummy,” starring Boris Karloff and directed by Karl Freund. There have been a lot of mummies and mummy hunters over the years, including Lon Chaney Jr., Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Brendan Fraser. But Karloff is still the best.

Movie-A-Day #46: Killer Condom (1996).

February 15, 2011

Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day, it stands to reason that this week is also National Condom Week in the United States. That’s because an important part of a healthy romantic relationship is good sex – and safe sex. So you should definitely always use a condom, and never ever worry about any of the bad things that happen in the German-made cultish insanity of “Killer Condom.” It’s totally fictional. And German. So don’t be scared, condoms are really good things. I swear.

Movie-A-Day #45: Before Sunrise (1995).

February 14, 2011

Valentine’s Day is perfect for snuggling up with your loved one to watch a glorious romantic movie. Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” is my favorite. What’s yours?

Movie-A-Day #44: The Right Stuff (1983).

February 13, 2011

Chuck Yeager is a badass. Besides being a bona fide war hero, he was also the first pilot to break the sound barrier and still holds all sorts of speed and altitude records. Plus, his achievements helped pave the way for the American space program, as chronicled in the film version of Tom Wolfe’s book “The Right Stuff,” where he was played by Sam Shepard. And the general’s still with us, turning 88 years old today. Well done, sir.
