Happy 15th birthday to Hailee Steinfeld. She came out of nowhere last year to star in the Coen Brothers’ remake of “True Grit” and was one of the main reasons that film was better than its predecessor. And she’s got some more big roles on the way too, starring in upcoming adaptations of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Ender’s Game.”

Happy 51st birthday to Kenneth Branagh. He’s back in Hollywood after being absent a while, directing “Thor” and starring in “My Week With Marilyn.” But he really make his mark with his Shakespearean work, and the epitome of that is his epic version of “Hamlet.” It is a sprawling film, alternating between the silly and the sublime, much like its auteur.

But today’s bleak economic climate adds an extra layer of despair to the tragedy of Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman.” It’s one of the great American plays, and Dustin Hoffman’s performance in the film version is one of his most memorable roles.
