Movie-A-Day #177: Cabin Fever (2002).

June 26, 2011

It’s Log Cabin Day here in the United States, celebrating that familiar symbol of rugged Americana. The wide open frontier, Davy Crockett, Abe Lincoln… But when you’re out in the wilderness all alone, there’s always the danger of getting “Cabin Fever.” And that would be, um… bad. Very bad.

Movie-A-Day #176: The Diary of Anne Frank (1959).

June 25, 2011

“The Diary of a Young Girl,” a collection of writings by Jewish teenager Anne Frank, was first published in the Netherlands on this day in 1947. Since then it’s been published in dozens of languages all over the world, providing a devastating look at the human toll of the Holocaust. The film version, starring Millie Perkins and Shelley Winters, is somewhat sanitized but still highly acclaimed.

Movie-A-Day #175: The Harder They Come (1972).

June 24, 2011

The city of Kingston, Jamaica, was founded on this day way back in 1692, primarily as a home for refugees from the devastating Port Royal earthquake that shook the island. In the centuries since it has seen more than its share of violence and struggle, particularly in the slums that gave birth to reggae music. “The Harder They Come” is an essential celebration of the gangster side of the rich cultural legacy of reggae.

Movie-A-Day #174: Fargo (1996).

June 23, 2011

Happy 54th birthday to the awesome-tastic Frances McDormand. Marge Gunderson of “Fargo” is one of the characters of modern cinema, but Marge wouldn’t have been half as great without McDormand playing her. Oh yah!

Movie-A-Day #173: In the Company of Men (1997).

June 22, 2011

Today is Stupid Guy Thing Day, which I guess is an occasion to call men to task for the stupid things they do. (Whatever. As if women don’t do plenty of stupid things too.) Anyway, the things the guys in “In the Company of Men” do are not only stupid, but also downright malicious. Don’t be like them.
