Movie-A-Day #88: Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (1983).

March 29, 2011

Happy 68th birthday to Eric Idle! Monty Python changed the world of comedy in so many ways and although their last movie “The Meaning of Life” is fairly uneven, it does have many of my favorite Eric Idle moments.

I like Terry Gilliam’s mini-movie before the main feature, and how it ties into the main feature at the end.

It’s uneven, yes, and doesn’t really hold up as a movie, but there’s almost nothing in it that isn’t funny, and it contains some of their best sketches. Life of Brian is probably their best work overall, but MOL would be worth it for “Every Sperm Is Sacred,” if for nothing else.

    Now…what was that about hats?

I debated between posting this or “Life of Brian” just because I think “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” is probably the most brilliant thing Eric Idle did as a Python. But “Life of Brian” is really more Graham’s movie. But still, “The Galaxy Song” is great, and I have an unexplained affection of Idle’s performance in the “Salmon Mousse” bit.
