Movie-A-Day #129: Peter Pan (1953).

May 9, 2011

“Peter Pan” creator J.M. Barrie was born on this day in 1860. And of the countless adaptations of his story, Disney’s classic take is still the best.

Movie-A-Day #128: Mother (1996).

Happy Mother’s Day! Make sure you take some time out for that special lady today. There have been a whole lot of mothers in movies, from the good to the bad to the deranged, but it’s hard to beat Albert Brooks’ deconstruction of the mother/son relationship in “Mother,” with Debbie Reynolds.

Movie-A-Day #127: High Noon (1952).

Today’s birthday belongs to Gary Cooper, the star and moral center of one of the great American movies, “High Noon.” I don’t care how many times you’ve seen it, watch it again. It’s worth it.

Movie-A-Day #126: F For Fake (1974).

May 6, 2011

Today marks the birth of Orson Welles, a singular genius if there ever was one. He may have redefined radio with “War of the Worlds” and filmmaking with “Citizen Kane,” but his immense talent came with an equally immense ego, leading to a career full of tantalizing or flawed near-masterpieces. If there’s a film that captures his intellect, ego and aesthetic vision best, it’s “F For Fake,” his semi-documentary/visual essay on the world of art forgery and its place in the larger creative world. It’s one of the least known entries in the Welles canon, but perhaps one of the most essential.

Movie-A-Day #125: El Mariachi (1992).

Happy Cinco de Mayo – a minor Mexican holiday that has been turned into a big deal by the Americans. If you’re looking for a movie for today, how about one with both Mexican and American roots – Robert Rodriguez’s terrific low budget debut film, “El Mariachi.”
