Movie-A-Day #134: Prom Night (1980).
Prom season is here. A chance to party like a grown-up, a source of anxiety, a disgusting social ritual – it can mean a lot of different things to different people. But however you kids may be approaching your prom, let’s hope you have a better time of it than Jamie Lee Curtis does in “Prom Night.” Stay safe, kiddies, and don’t mess around with no axe murderers.
Movie-A-Day #133: Friday the 13th (1980).
Today is the only Friday the 13th of 2011. And the first film is the only one in the “Friday the 13th” series that matters. So there ya go.
Movie-A-Day #132: The Philadelphia Story (1940).
It’s Katharine Hepburn’s birthday today. She made so many marvelous movies that it’s hard to pick just one to highlight today, but “The Philadelphia Story” is also blessed with the presence of Cary Grant and James Stewart, as well as the direction of George Cukor. It’s just about everything you love about classic Hollywood all rolled up into one beautiful package.
Movie-A-Day #131: Eating Raoul (1982).
Today is Eat What You Want Day in the United States. But should you be “Eating Raoul”? Probably not. You have to draw the line somewhere.
So, is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? As it turns out, it depends on who you ask. If you ask botanists, or any other kind of scientists or fact-driven individuals, they’ll tell you it’s a fruit – the seed-bearing ovary of a flowering plant. But if you ask lawyers, they’ll probably tell you it’s a vegetable. That’s because on this day in 1893, in the case of Nix v. Hedden, the United States Supreme Court overruled science and declared that tomatoes were vegetables for the purposes of import tariffs. And what’s more, the case still stands as established law today. Sure, it’s a strange chapter in legal history, but no less strange than “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes,” which is really a pretty awesome movie.
