“Mary Had a Little Lamb,” probably one of the first songs everyone in the English speaking world learns to sing as a child, was first published as a poem on this day in 1830. But what if, instead of simply following Mary to school, the lamb was screaming? Are the lambs still screaming? Can you hear them screaming, Clarice?
Movie-A-Day #143: Gamera (1965).
It’s World Turtle Day! Which means you should totally watch “Gamera” because he’s a friend to all children. What kid wouldn’t love a thousand foot tall turtle that flies and breathes fire? If you’re really feeling the turtle love today, follow it up with the rest of the films in the Gamera series. There’s some weird, weird stuff going on there.
Movie-A-Day #142: Neighbors (1981).
Today is Neighbor Day. So after you go out there to try to meet the folks living next door who you hardly know, take the time to revisit “Neighbors.” The all-but-forgotten entry in the Dan Aykroyd/John Belushi canon, this one has the guys playing against type – Belushi as the staid, conservative one and Aykroyd as the out of control ball of energy. It would have been a much better movie if their roles were reversed (as they had originally been cast), but it’s an interesting failure nonetheless. It was also Belushi’s last film.
Movie-A-Day #141: The Rapture (1991).
Welp, here we are. This is it – the end of the world. Or at least it is if you believe Harold Camping of Family Radio. So while you’re waiting to raptured away at some point today, spend that time with the Mimi Rogers-David Duchovny flick “The Rapture.” That way, you’ll know what to do when the end comes.
Movie-A-Day #140: My Fair Lady (1964).
It’s Eliza Doolittle Day! This proclamation isn’t based on any authority other than the fact that it’s mentioned in the lyrics of a song from “My Fair Lady,” but hardcore fans like to use it as a chance to celebrate their favorite film. Are you one of them?
