Movie-A-Day #159: Finding Nemo (2003).

June 8, 2011

Today is World Oceans Day. The oceans, of course, are the most important resource on the planet, and what better way to promote their conservation than cute little fish? So watch “Finding Nemo” and try not to spoil his habitat, OK?

Movie-A-Day #158: Purple Rain (1984).

June 7, 2011

Happy 53rd birthday to a little fella out of Minneapolis known as Prince Rogers Nelson – and a lot of other things along the way as well. We’d love to give Prince a little ego fluffing to make him feel good on his special day, but nothing we could do would match the ego fluffing he gave himself in “Purple Rain.”

Movie-A-Day #157: The Longest Day (1962).

June 6, 2011

On June 6, 1944 – D-Day – Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, to push back the occupying German forces and gain a foothold to begin the push that would eventually end World War II in Europe. The losses were heavy, but it was the Greatest Generation’s greatest moment. We’ve already visited the treatment of D-Day in “Saving Private Ryan” for Memorial Day, but “The Longest Day” handles it well too.

Movie-A-Day #156: Goldfinger (1964).

June 5, 2011

On this day in 1933, the United States Congress passed a joint resolution that became a key step in moving the country away from the gold standard and stabilizing the economy to ease the Great Depression. But that’s probably not what Auric Goldfinger wants to hear.

Movie-A-Day #155: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001).

June 4, 2011

Happy 36th birthday to the wonderful Angelina Jolie. There’s a difference between the babes who just run around and look pretty in action movies, and legitimate female action heroes. And Jolie is definitely the latter, at the head of a very short list. As she demonstrates in the first “Tomb Raider” movie.
