Movie-A-Day #200: The Sweet Hereafter (1997).

July 19, 2011

Today is director Atom Egoyan’s 51st birthday. His films can be baffling, opaque, philosophical or pretentious, depending on your viewpoint. But the devastating “The Sweet Hereafter” is probably the best of the bunch.

It’s been a long time since I watched this. I don’t know if I could bring myself to do so again, though it is a great film. Beautiful and devastating, most definitely.

I note with some surprise that I haven’t seen any of his other movies… any recommendations? Exotica seems like the next natural choice.

I’ve only seen a couple of other Egoyan films besides this. “Exotica” was not bad, but I remember it being a little cold and distant. And I thought “The Adjuster” was just pretentious twaddle.
